Congratulations are in order for Brainerd Warriors Matt Pohlkamp. Matt has made a verbal commitment to play for the Bowling Green Falcons. Bowling Green State University is a member of CCHA Division 1 Hockey. In 2013 they will be joining the WCHA. Ty Eigner former Warrior Coach is an assistant with the Falcon’s. Ty and one of the other assistants at BG were at the Elite games this past fall and observed him.  It is suspected that others may look at him all winter long. But he wanted to have that all settled before the season begins. Matt went to Bowling Green for a visit; it felt very comfortable to him and his family. They all really liked the setting and the program. Matt was offered a full scholarship as well. This put the icing on the cake for him. Along with the support of his family the decision was made. This will allow him to focus all of his energy on Hockey with the Warriors.

In making his decision he relied on assistance from his family and the experience of his friend Joshua Archibald. Josh went through a similar process last year. It helped him to know what he had gone through. Plans are to play with a USHL team for a year and then move up to the College level. He believes this will give him the needed experience to be a better player at that level.

Matt is a quiet, humble young man who loves the game of hockey. He is active in his Catholic faith believing that hard work and prayer are an important part of his life. Matt has a large family and they are very important to him. “Shooter” his nickname, was given to him at a young age by his mom, it has stuck, and of course with his shooting skills in hockey is all the more emphasized. His brother Chris is on the Warrior Varsity team as well. Sarah 14, plays Volleyball and Track, the rest all play hockey including Abby 10, Eric 7 and Molly 5. His parents are Mary and Joe.

This past summer Matt had a tough decision to make. His other love, football, had to be put on the shelf; Matt’s dad is one of the Coaches for the Warrior Football team. Hockey is number one, it is his future, and Matt knew he would have to make a solid commitment to play in the Elite leagues this past summer. This helped him to continue to develop as a player. Initially there were some disappointed people, however after listening to why he made the decision they all were supportive of him. Matt has had a stellar career with the Warriors; statistically he is on track to break the All-time Career point’s record that is currently held by J.P. Platisha at 174. Matt is starting his 4th year of varsity hockey where he received rookie of the year honors in his freshman year. As a sophomore and a junior playing behind the MVP and friend Joshua Archibald he received the Unsung Hero award both years. He has accrued 114 points through three seasons. He is currently 5th on the Warriors list and has one season remaining.

Favorite player and team, well with the support and assistance he has received at Minnesota Hockey Camps it is not too hard to guess, Pittsburg Penguins and of course Sidney Crosby.

As for his future, Hockey will be a big part of it. School, at Bowling Green, he wants to pursue being a teacher, and possibly an Athletic Director some Day.

Again Congratulations to Matt.
