And the winner is...MN Football Hub offensive top performer revealed

Top performer winner

Carter Birr, Albany. The senior carried the Huskies to a 52-37 victory against Princeton on Oct. 1, taking 23 carries for 290 rushing yards. Averaging 12.6 yards per carry, Birr scored five touchdowns — three for over 50 yards — and tallied a pair of two-point conversions. 

Top performer candidates

Carter Birr, Albany. The senior carried the Huskies to a 52-37 victory against Princeton on Oct. 1, taking 23 carries for 290 rushing yards. Averaging 12.6 yards per carry, Birr scored five touchdowns — three for over 50 yards — and tallied a pair of two-point conversions. 

Brendon Buerkle, Springfield. The senior quarterback leads the state with 1,758 passing yards through five games, having thrown for over 300 yards in each game this season. On Oct. 1, Buerkle completed 24 passes — his 110 completions is second among quarterbacks in the state — for 310 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers defeated St. James 44-6.

Jacob Deutschman, Anoka. The senior quarterback amassed 335 passing yards on Oct. 1, completing 30 passes in the Tornadoes’ 31-24 defeat of Mounds View. Deutschman recorded his first touchdown on a 30-yard pass in the second quarter. Then with the Tornadoes down by a point late in the fourth quarter, Deutschman carried a short run in for a touchdown with 18 seconds left to give the Tornadoes the win.

Matt Donovan, Kasson-Mantorville. In addition to completing one touchdown on two completed passes, the senior quarterback led the Komets' run game. Donovan recorded a team-high 226 rushing yards on 16 carries. He tallied four touchdowns, including an 88-yard touchdown carry to open the game’s scoring, and a 73-yard carry to put the Komets ahead by one point midway through the fourth quarter, a lead that they would hold. The Komets edged Faribault 42-41 on Oct. 1.

William Dvorak, St. Louis Park. The senior quarterback had a season-high 76.9 percent completion rate, making 10-of-13 passes in an Oct. 1 victory against Orono. Dvorak threw for 154 passing yards and two touchdowns, including a 50-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter that would stand as the game winner to give the Orioles the 22-21 edge.

Jorge Irizarry, St. Paul Harding/Humboldt. The Knights played two games last week, winning both thanks to the junior quarterback’s nine combined touchdowns. Irizarry led the Knights’ 48-6 victory against Minneapolis Roosevelt on Sept. 28, recording four rushing touchdowns, 58 rushing yards, a passing touchdown and 138 passing yards. On Oct. 2, Irizarry led the Knights to a 25-18 win at Minneapolis Henry. He completed six passes for 140 yards and a touchdown, and he added 92 yards on 21 carries for three rushing touchdowns.

Jamen Malone, Robbinsdale Armstrong. The Falcons put a season-high 49 points on the scoreboard on Oct. 1, handily defeating Chanhassen. The junior quarterback threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns. He completed 17 passes, including his first one a 75-yard touchdown pass. The three touchdowns were consecutive scores in the second quarter that put the Falcons ahead, as they went on to win 49-28.

Max McEnelly, Waconia. The Wildcats bounced back after being shut out the week prior, earning a 34-3 win at Bloomington Jefferson on Oct. 1. The junior running back had 32 carries, rushing for 225 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats’ offense.

Sawyer Seidl, Hill-Murray. The junior got the Pioneers on the board early, scoring a touchdown on a 61-yard run just 18 seconds into the Pioneers' battle against Tartan on Oct. 1. Seidl added his second touchdown of the game later in the quarter to give the Pioneers a 12-0 lead and before recording his final score near the end of the third quarter on a 54-yard carry. Seidl tallied 247 rushing yards on 22 carries as the Pioneers defeated Tartan 27-20.

Justin Wohlers, Lake City. The senior quarterback split his offensive efforts fairly evenly between passing and rushing. Wohlers went 12-for-18, throwing for 143 yards and a touchdown. Wohlers added 15 carries, recording 116 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Pine Island 30-14.
