When Tanner Bruender broke the glass at the south end of Braemar Arena Saturday afternoon with his shot, he took it as a bad omen.

One year prior on that rink, his Bantam team didn’t fare well after a Zamboni broke down, he said, and his teammates were now gently razing him for a delay that lasted 30 minutes. The puck or a piece of plexiglass struck a JV teammate walking by in the area behind the glass. Nothing too serious perhaps, but not a promising start, he felt.

First Report

Chaska sophomore Tanner Bruender’s goal two minutes, seven seconds into overtime has the Hawks through to the Class 2A, Section 2 final with a 3-2 win over Minnetonka Saturday evening at Braemar Arena.

A physical contest from the start, Chaska fought its way through and battled back from a two-goal deficit to push for the extra session.

No. 2-seeded Minnetonka opened the scoring with 9:38 into the opening period on a goal from Hagen Burrows. Midway through the second, the Skippers added a second on a goal from Ashton Schultz, and Minnetonka (16-10-1) held a 2-0 lead. Then Chaska (22-5) came to life after scoring a power play from Zach Seltun with 3:30 left, and it notched the equalizer with 1.9 seconds remaining when defenseman Sam Rinzel launched a rocket from the blue line that made its way through traffic and into the back of the net.

In overtime, Bruender’s goal has Chaska moving on.

Chaska goalie Carter Wishart made 29 saves on 31 shots to earn the win in the crease, while his counterpart Kaiser Nelson stopped 27 of 30.

Chaska advances to its first-ever section final, where they will face No. 4-seed Prior Lake on Wednesday night, back at Braemar Arena.
