The Crimson never trailed in their triumph over the Royals on Thursday that sent the team to the Class 2A state tournament.

Maple Grove coach Todd Bergland went into the locker room at the second intermission of his team’s section championship game on Thursday with a message in mind. His Crimson held a lead over conference rival Rogers, just like another time this season.

“So, I went in the locker room and I said, ‘boys, remember Jan. 15,’” Bergland said.

That’s the game when Maple Grove was up 3-2 at the second intermission and then 4-2 early in the third period before Rogers stormed back with a trio of goals to complete the comeback, 5-4 victory. Hats off to Rogers in that case, Bergland said, before continuing his message to his team on Thursday.

“I said, ‘that will not happen again. And you better make darn sure it doesn’t,’” Bergland said.

First Report

For the third straight year – and fourth time in the past six years – Maple Grove is headed to the Class 2A state tournament.

The No. 2-seeded Crimson responded each time it gave up a goal, resulting in a few two-goal leads to ultimately finish with a 4-2 victory over top-seeded Rogers Thursday at Furniture and Things Community Event Center in Elk River.

The Crimson made it 1-0 with a few minutes to play in the first period on Finn Brink’s 26th of the season. Joshua Giuliani doubled the lead only 1 minute, 36 seconds into the second period with a power-play goal. Late in the period, Rogers cut into the deficit with its own man-advantage tally. But the Crimson answered 40 seconds later with a goal from Landen Gunderson to regain the two-goal lead.

In goal, Crimson senior Toby Hopp stopped 31 shots, while Rogers junior Cade Chapman made 27 saves.

The game marked the first section championship game for the Royals (19-8-1), who’d only advanced to the section semifinals twice previously since its move to Class 2A in 2014. Meanwhile, the Crimson (21-6-1) played in the Class 2A, Section 5 championship game for the seventh consecutive year.

Maple Grove has won 12 of its past 13 games since losing to Rogers on Jan. 15.
