A goal by Gavyn Thoreson gave Andover a 2-1 victory in double overtime Thursday in a quarterfinal of the boys' hockey state tournament at Xcel Energy Center. The Huskies advance to face No. 1 seed Hill-Murray at 8 p.m. Friday.

Andover, in its third state tournament appearance, reached its first semifinal. The Huskies beat Hill-Murray 2-1 in overtime on Dec. 29.

Thorsen chipped the puck home, converting a pass from Cayden Casey.

“I made eye contact, and he made a perfect pass,” said Thoreson, who used what he’s learned from a “stiff stick” practice drill to make the proper redirect.

Casey’s goal with 16.3 seconds remaining in regulation was disallowed after video review determined the Andover forward directed the puck into the net with his right skate.

“That added intrigue,” said Moorhead coach Jon Ammerman, whose team beat Andover 6-1 on Dec. 3.

A Moorhead blocked shot inadvertently produced a 1-0 lead for No. 5 seed Andover (23-5-1) in the second period. Thoreson blasted a puck off a Spuds player, and it went toward junior Cooper Conway. He scored his 12th goal of the season.

Moorhead’s Harper Bentz knotted the game later in the period with his 38th goal.

A scoreless opening period included two fruitless power plays by No. 4 seed Moorhead (21-7-1). Andover goalie Austin Brauns, a Frank Brimsek Senior Goalie of the Year award finalist, kept Moorhead from drawing first blood.

“It was obvious disappointing for us but a great high school hockey game,” Ammerman said. “Their guys made a great play at the end. Unfortunately we didn’t come out on top.”
