High expectations will follow Warroad this winter.

Class 1A state runners-up from a year ago, the Warriors return an embarrassment of riches that fill out all areas of the team’s lineup, from their Brimsek Award candidate goaltender, through a seasoned and savvy defensive corps, and up to its top line that can match up with any another other Class 1A team in the state.

Yes, much is expected from the Warriors, and boy did they deliver in their season opener, a 7-1 road win over Delano that saw the hype of a top-five showdown melt into a running clock victory for the visitors.

“That’s the way we want to play,” said Warroad coach Jay Hardwick. “You never really know what to expect until you start (a season), and I wasn’t surprised, but it’s encouraging to see it this early. And now we just have to keep it going, and to keep getting better.”

Warroad jumped out of the gate, and led convincingly from start to finish en route to a 7-1 road victory at Delano Friday night.

Warroad goalie and preseason Brimsek Award candidate Hampton Slukynsky stopped 13 of 14 shots, and came within minutes of a season-opening shutout.
