Champlin Park/Coon Rapids couldn’t have scripted a better start to its matchup against Proctor/Hermantown on Friday night.

The Bluebirds, unranked in the Let’s Play Hockey coaches’ poll, scored 86 seconds into the game after Kyla Keding capitalized on a turnover in the defensive zone of the No. 2-1A Mirage and put her team up early.

If that wasn’t good enough, Taylor Zahalka scored just over two minutes later to give the Bluebirds a 2-0 lead.

They held that lead into the first intermission, where Champlin Park/Coon Rapids head coach Todd Gutterman let his team know that more pressure was coming from the Mirage.

“You tell them and you hope that gets through, but you just tell them that you know you’re going to get that counter punch,” Gutterman said. “I’ll be honest, I probably didn’t do a good enough job, because I don’t think we did a good enough job in the second period of being ready for that.”

First report

Champlin Park/Coon Rapids scored early then played solid defense to come away with a 5-2 victory over Proctor/Hermantown on Friday night at the Champlin Ice Forum.

The Bluebirds (3-3) got off to a hot start, scoring two goals in the opening four minutes.

Kyla Keding got on the score sheet first, as she intercepted an errant pass from the opposing goaltender and scored from close range. Taylor Zahalka doubled the Bluebirds’ lead as she received a spinning backhand pass from Brooklyn Johnson and converted on a quick wrist shot.

The Mirage (3-2) completely dominated the second period, outshooting the Bluebirds 11-3. Despite the shots advantage and constant pressure, the Mirage couldn’t find a goal and headed to the locker room for the second intermission still trailing by two goals.

The Bluebirds were able to keep the Mirage out of the net until seven minutes into the third period when Jane Eckstrom buried a rebound to make it a 2-1 game.

Instead of that opening the floodgates for the Mirage, it was the Bluebirds who responded, as Sydney Burnevik scored 34 seconds later.

Megan Bonfigt got one back for the Mirage less than two minutes later, and it set up a frantic finish.

The Mirage put a lot of offensive pressure on near the end, but Bluebird goalie Maddie Wostrel was able to stop everything in the final minutes. Empty-net goals by Burnevik and Kylie Scott secured the 5-2 win.
