Providence Academy was in an unfamiliar spot Tuesday. It fell behind twice in the first period and faced a one-goal deficit at the intermission. Coach Chris Lewis said his team took a little while to get going, noting there were some nerves on the ice facing a tough section opponent in Minneapolis.

The Lions did some of the right things in the first period; they just didn’t result in the puck hitting the back of the net, said top-line senior center Johnny Hendrickson.

“But things started clicking the second period, everything fell into place, which was ultimately a pretty electric 19 seconds,” Hendrickson said.

Providence Academy scored six second-period goals to grab control of the game and an eventual 7-3 victory over Minneapolis at Plymouth Ice Center. The Lions (4-0), ranked No. 9 in Class 1A in a coaches’ poll, already had a 3-2 lead when they scored three goals in a 19-second span in the middle of the second period to go up 6-2.

First Report

Providence Academy kept its undefeated record going with a victory over a section rival Tuesday night. The Lions took a commanding lead in the middle of the second period with a trio of goals in a 19-second span to build a 6-2 cushion.

The Lions, ranked No. 9 in Class 1A in a coaches’ poll, defeated No 13-1A Minneapolis 7-3 at Plymouth Ice Center. The Lions came into the night scoring nine goals per game after three decisive victories by 6-1, 10-2,11-3 margins this season.

For the first time this season, the Lions (4-0) were down in the first period after 1-0 and 2-1 deficits. But it was all about the Lions’ speed and skill of its top line with a six-goal second period, highlighted by three goals from junior Louie Wehmann. He finished the game with four goals and two assists, giving him 50 career goals in 45 career games.

Lions senior goaltender Nate Miest stopped 23 shots to improve to 4-0 this season. At the other end, sophomore Griffin Simpson made the first 19 saves and then junior Mike Shroat made six saves for Minneapolis (0-3).

With the victory, the Lions avenged a pair of losses to Minneapolis last season. Minneapolis first defeated the Lions 8-2 a year ago, then beat them 5-1 in the Class 1A Section 2 semifinal on the way to the state tournament. The season prior, Minneapolis also ended the Lions’ season, scoring a game-winning with 35 seconds left in regulation in the section quarterfinal.
