Top performer winner

Zane Spaniol, Blaine. The Bengals snapped their season-long winless streak on Dec. 20 behind a near perfect performance from their senior goaltender. Spaniol, who is facing an average of nearly 50 shots per game this season, stopped 45 of 46 shots in the Bengals’ 4-1 win against Hudson Raiders, posting a season-high .978 save percentage.

Top performer candidates

Evan Girdler, Red Lake Falls. The Eagles set the pace early against Lake of the Woods on Dec. 20, scoring 30 seconds into the game from an assist by Girdler. The early point was just the beginning for the senior forward, who added four more assists in the first period, a goal in the second, and two more assists in the third. Girdler ended the Eagles’ 9-1 rout with one goal and seven assists.

Jannes Kamp, Southwest Christian/Richfield. The Stars’ junior goalie one-upped his own solid recent performances in net in the Stars' win against Hopkins on Dec. 20. After giving up just one goal in each of the Stars’ past three wins, Kamp earned his first shutout of the season, making 38 saves in the 2-0 victory over the Royals.

Griffin Krone, St. Louis Park. The junior forward has recorded a point or two in all but one of the Orioles’ seven games so far this season. Following four straight games with one goal, Krone netted a season-high three goals on Dec. 23. Krone scored twice in the first periods, but still trailed 5-4.  A quiet third period made it look like Minneapolis might take home the win, but then with 13 seconds remaining on the clock, Krone scored to tie the game at 5-5 and send it to overtime. The game ended in a 5-5 tie and Krone’s late tally helped extend the Orioles’ undefeated streak to three games.

Carson Pilgrim, Warroad. The junior forward was an effective presence during special teams play on Dec. 20 as the Warriors defeated Thief River Falls 5-1. Pilgrim bookended the Warriors’ scoring, tallying shorthanded goals in the second and third periods. He was also a playmaker on the Warriors’ power play, assisting on a power play goal during the team's only opportunity on the night. Pilgrim is averaging over three points per game this season, having recorded 19 points through six games.
