A glass half full can be looked at two ways, much like a tie in competition.

On Wednesday afternoon, highly-ranked Rogers worked, toiled and put up nearly 40 shots, only to see their puck bounces go the other way for the second straight game. Eden Prairie, youthful and learning on the job, packed it in on defense and limited Rogers’ killer speed and flash to the perimeters, preventing Grade A scoring chances from ever developing.

The two teams will likely walk away from the 1-1 draw with very different sentiments.

For the Royals, ranked No. 4 in this week’s Class 2A coaches’ poll, suffering a draw for the second straight night against a team with a losing record could be reason for concern, extending a three-game winless streak after a 6-0 start.

First report

After nearly 50 minutes of scoreless play, each side scored a minute apart in the waning moments to push the game to overtime and an eventual tie between Rogers and Eden Prairie Wednesday afternoon at the Tradition Holiday Invitational at Dakotah! Ice Center.

A tightly wound and congested game played out through the first two and a half periods as Rogers (6-1-2) used its speed to generate zone time, but was granted limited quality scoring chances by a stingy Eden Prairie defense.

With 1:53 left in regulation, Mason Moe scored for the Eagles (4-5-1), though the lead was short lived. Sixty-three seconds later, Rogers—with the empty net—answered as Drew Krekelberg converted for the Royals, ranked No. 4 in the Class 2A Let's Play Hockey poll.

Overtime proved scoreless, allowing unranked Eden Prairie to earn sort of a moral victory against a highly-ranked opponent, while Rogers is left with its tires spinning with draws two games in a row.

Eden Prairie goaltender Isaiah Paulnock stopped 36 of 37 shots. His counterpart, Rogers goalie Cade Chapman, stopped 27 of 28.
