At the close of December and the calendar year, St. Thomas Academy coach Mike Randolph can take stock of his situation.

No active coach in the state has won more games than Randolph, who is pushing 700 career wins after 32 seasons and two championships at Duluth East.

But this season is different. In his first as head man of a new team, along with the influx of new and inexperienced talent for the Cadets, Randolph is again learning on the job. Despite being ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 2A Let's Play Hockey poll and 9-2 record, the Cadets are very much a work in progress.

“It’s early and we’re still experimenting,” Randolph said. “I’m new and they’re new. They don’t completely understand what I mean and what I say, and they still laugh at my jokes.”

First Report

St. Thomas Academy senior captain Tommy Cronin scored 45 seconds into the game and the Cadets led the rest of the way en route to a 4-1 victory over Moorhead Thursday afternoon at the Tradition Holiday Invitational at Dakotah! Ice Center in Prior Lake.

Heavily outshot, the Cadets, ranked No. 3 in Class 2A of the Let’s Play Hockey coaches’ poll, made the most of their scoring chances while Moorhead squandered too many of theirs. The Spuds were given five power plays to work with, including a five-minute major that produced a 5-on-3 in the second period, but No. 12-2A Moorhead was not able to convert at perhaps their biggest opportunity.

Cronin’s goal gives him a team-leading 15 for the season, and 25 points. Max Candon added a goal and an assist to help lead the Cadets (9-2-0).

Easton Lammers scored the lone goal for the Spuds (6-5-0).

St. Thomas Academy goaltender Tyler Magozzi earned the win between the pipes, stopping 28 of 29 shots to improve his save percentage to .942 and goals against average to 1.15 for the season, with a perfect 6-0 mark.
