Top performer winner

Calvin Jones, Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato. The senior forward played a key role in two Dragons wins last week, recording nine total points. In a 5-2 win against River Lakes on Dec. 28, Jones tallied a pair of goals and added two assists, all in the second period. Two nights later, Jones led a comeback win against Sauk Rapids-Rice. Down 3-0 late in the first, Jones scored four unanswered goals, including three in the second period as the Dragons went on to win 6-4.

Top performer candidates

Charlie Goff, Morris/Benson. Goff helped the Storm put together back-to-back wins last week after five consecutive losses. After contributing four points in the Storm’s 11-0 rout of Redwood Valley on Dec. 27, the junior forward played an important part in the Storm’s close matchup against Prairie Centre on Dec. 29. Goff scored two goals in the first period, including one on a power play, and added a goal and assist in the second. Goff's power-play goal in overtime broke a 6-6 tie and helped seal the win for the Storm.

Alex Sabev, Irondale. The junior goaltender is facing an onslaught of shots this season, seeing an average of 46 shots on goal per game. Sabev, who has the fifth-best save percentage in the state this season at .946, earned wins in two close games last week. He made 49 saves in the Knights’ 3-2 win at Duluth Denfeld and stopped 45 shots in a 2-1 victory against Mankato West, facing more than double the shots of his opposing goaltenders in both matchups.

Gavyn Thoreson, Andover. Thoreson is averaging nearly two points per game this season, but exceeded that average in all three of the Huskies’ wins last week. In a 9-3 win at Benilde-St. Margaret’s on Dec. 27, Thoreson contributed a season-high six points—four goals and two assists. He followed that performance the next night with a pair of goals and as many assists as the Huskies defeated Hill-Murray 5-2, and then finished the week with one goal and two assists in a 6-0 victory against Rosemount. Of his 13 points in those three games, five points were on power plays and two were shorthanded.

Noah Urness, Roseau. The Rams’ junior forward is having a standout season, finding himself in the top few goal-scorers in the state as 2022 came to a close. Urness has scored 21 goals this season, fourth most in the state, and has 37 points, third most in the state. Last week he led Rams wins against Mankato East/Loyola and Minot, recording points on all but five of the Rams' 17 combined goals. Urness scored a hat trick and added two assists in the 7-2 victory against Mankato East/Loyola and tallied four goals and three assists in the 10-2 win against Minot.
