Something peculiar is happening in Wayzata.

The bread and butter that was — the ultra-structured style of play that relied on defense, discipline and denying an opponent’s use of its strengths — has been overshadowed. Looser play and a free-wheeling vertical style of attack has taken over, and boy, is it working.

The Trojans, ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A coaches’ poll released Jan. 10, had some fun with it Thursday night at home, tearing through St. Michael-Albertville with a 9-0 running-clock victory in which 13 skaters recorded a point.

First Report

Wayzata burned bright from the start, then erupted with a five-goal third period before finishing off St. Michael-Albertville with a 9-0 running clock victory Thursday night at Plymouth Ice Center.

Cade De St. Hubert and Luke Miller each scored twice, and combined for eight points as the Trojans (11-1-1), ranked No. 1-2A in this week’s Let’s Play Hockey coaches’ poll, rolled over their guests, and outshot the Knights 46-10.

Trojans’ senior goaltender Will Ingemann, a leading candidate for the Brimsek Award awarded to the state’s top goaltender, earned his first shutout of the season and lowered his goals-against-average to 1.38 with a .947 save percentage.

Goaltender Owen Westerman finished with 33 saves for the Knights (1-10-0).
