In a battle between two top-10 teams, who just happened to be conference and section rivals, the game on the ice lived up to the on-paper hype between Rogers and Maple Grove.

The host Crimson erased a pair of one-goal deficits before Rogers ultimately tied the game at 3-3 in an entertaining third period. Overtime couldn’t find a winner, so Maple Grove, ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 2A coaches’ poll, and No. 9-2A Rogers finished with a tie Saturday in front of a jam-packed arena at Maple Grove Community Center.

First Report

In a battle between two top 10-ranked teams who are also conference and section rivals, perhaps it’s not all that surprising that the contest between Rogers and Maple Grove ended in a 3-3 tie Saturday.

Rogers (9-2-3), ranked No. 9 in the latest Class 2A coaches’ poll, took a 1-0 lead in the second period, but No. 3-2A Maple Grove (12-2-1) tied the game with 40.4 seconds remaining in the middle period. Rogers took a 2-1 lead in the third before Maple Grove went up 3-2 with two goals in 37 seconds. Sam Ranallo scored his second goal of the game for Rogers to tie the game again before a scoreless overtime.

In goal, senior Jack Roach stopped 31 shots for the Crimson, while Rogers senior Cade Chapman made 50 saves at the other end.

Both teams entered the day unbeaten in the Northwest Suburban conference sitting No. 1 and 2 in the standings.

Saturday was their first meeting since Maple Grove upset Rogers in the Class 2A, Section 5 championship last season with a 4-2 victory. Rogers won last year’s regular-season meeting at home, 6-5. They’re scheduled to play again on Feb. 3.
