Shane Gersich, John Peterson and Joey Marooney – all underclassmen – combined for five goals and 11 points while Nick Schreiter made 28 saves to help Holy Family Catholic skate to a 5-3 win over Rochester Lourdes on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at Graham Arena in Rochester.

Peterson opened the scoring 11 minutes, 36 seconds into the first on a nice tip-in off an Austin Balm centering pass. Peterson fed Gersich in the slot just four minutes later, and he made it 2-0 with a quick wrist shot that beat Lourdes goalie Andrew Ellingson low blocker.

After Marooney’s first goal of the night put Holy Family up 3-0, Rochester Lourdes battled back.

Karl Krecke’s shot from the point found a lane and beat Schreiter through traffic to cut the lead to two. Alex Funk scored a pretty unassisted goal six minutes later to get the Eagles within one, but that was as close as they’d get.

Marooney scored late in the middle period and early in the third to give Holy Family a 5-2 lead, and Schreiter was able to stop 14 of 15 shots he saw in the final period to secure the win.

Will Garin had a single assist for Holy Family Catholic (5-2-0), which is off until Thursday, Dec. 29, when it squares off against Roseau in the Rams’ holiday tournament.

Jason Samuelson scored the final goal for No. 9-ranked Rochester Lourdes (5-3-0). Justin Dewitz had two assists, and Ellingson finished with 19 saves.

Rochester Lourdes plays on Thursday on the road against Providence in its final tune up before the Rochester Kiwanis Holiday Tournament next week.

1. Joey Marooney, Holy Family Catholic
The sophomore forward was explosive in the offensive zone all night, notching a hat trick and four total points. His production wasn’t limited to the offensive side of the puck, though. Marooney’s speed caused Rochester Lourdes players to make tough plays, resulting in turnovers and quick transitions for Holy Family.

2. Shane Gersich, Holy Family Catholic
The super freshman showed his wheels and knack for the net. He had three points, hit a pipe and was responsible defensively. Perhaps the most impressive part of Gersich's night was his passing – his poise for a young player is remarkable.

3. John Peterson, Holy Family Catholic
Only a freshman, Peterson looked like a seasoned vet against the Eagles. He scored a goal, set up three others and showed off his dangling abilities on several occasions. Even though he logged a lot of ice time, Peterson’s production didn’t dip from the opening faceoff to the final horn.
