Maple Grove needed a boost. The Crimson dropped two of their last three games coming into Saturday afternoon’s game, including an overtime loss to Centennial and a loss to section-rival Rogers.

So, a 3-2 victory over conference-rival Andover at Maple Grove Community Center was just what the hockey gods ordered for the Crimson.

“With that Rogers loss, it kind of put us down,” said Maple Grove junior Lucas Busch. “But a game like this gets our confidence up. We’ve got two more against Hill-Murray and St. Thomas, and this is the way we need to be playing. Our best hockey, and we’re doing it.”

First Report

Maple Grove held three one-goal leads over conference rival Andover, and that lead held up for a 3-2 victory Saturday afternoon at the Maple Grove Community Center.

Senior defenseman Grant Leneau made it 1-0 in the first period before junior Lucas Busch converted on the power play for a 2-1 lead in the second. Andover’s Cayden Casey recorded his second goal against Maple Grove this season to tie the game 1-1.

Busch scored his second of the game — the eventual winner — with 5:39 remaining in regulation.

Maple Grove (17-5-1), ranked No. 8 in Class 2A by the latest coaches’ poll, rebounded from having lost two of its past three games entering Saturday.

In goal, Maple Grove senior Jack Roach stopped 27 shots, while Andover sophomore Cal Conway made 29 saves for the Huskies.

The loss for No. 3-ranked Andover (17-6-1) snaps a 10-game winning streak. Its last two losses on the schedule came against Maple Grove. The Crimson also defeated Andover 4-1 on Jan. 5 on the road to sweep the regular-season series.
