Wayzata lost its first meeting to Edina in January during what turned into a 0-4-1 stretch for the Trojans, once ranked No. 1 in Class 2A this season. Edina defeated Wayzata on its home ice near the end of January.

With Wayzata ranked No. 6 in Class 2A, according to the latest coaches’ poll, and Edina ranked No. 2 coming into their Saturday afternoon regular-season finale, another close contest looked to be on tap, right? Well, the Trojans shut out the Hornets 7-0, putting up a four-goal third period.

So, what changed for Wayzata since its January matchup with its Lake Conference rival?

First report

Wayzata didn’t register a shot on goal until the 6:23 mark of the first period. But it was only the beginning before the floodgates opened.

The shot went in as part of a 2-0 first period for the Trojans, ranked No. 6 in Class 2A in the latest coaches’ poll, as they upset No. 2-ranked Edina 7-0 in Saturday afternoon’s regular-season finale at Plymouth Ice Center. The Trojans scored late in the second before junior Brittan Alstead scored a pair in the third period.

Edina allowed a season-high seven goals; the Hornets had allowed four goals only once this season previously.

In net, senior Will Ingemann made 25 saves for his sixth shutout, while Edina senior Robbie Clarkowski stopped 29 shots at the other end. Both goaltenders rank in the top 10 in the state in save percentage and goals-against average this season.

The Lake Conference foes split the regular-season series, with Edina (17-6-1) winning its home game on Jan. 26 by a 5-3 score. These Class 2A, Section 6 rivals have also met in the section playoffs in each of the past three seasons; Edina defeated Wayzata 1-0 in overtime in last year’s semifinals.
