Jayson Shaugabay's record-breaking season helped the Warroad senior secure Associated Press' (AP) top prize.

The University of Minnesota Duluth-commit was named the 2023 AP Minnesota boys hockey Player of the Year on March 17 after leading his team to a 29-1-1 record this season.

Shaugabay is one of six players to be named to AP's First Team All-State, and left his best stuff for last, shattering team records and surpassing career bests in his senior season.

His goal and four assists in a 10-4 win over Fergus Falls on Jan. 7 moved Shaugabay into historic status, becoming Warroad's all-time scoring leader passing Washington Capital T.J. Oshie, who scored 241 points in his Warroad career from 2002-2005.

Shaugabay scored 33 goals, dished out 63 assists, and finished with 96 points this season, all career bests. His all-time points total stands at 304.

Warroad lost 6-5 in overtime to Mahtomedi in the Class 1A state championship game on March 11. Shaugabay was held scoreless, but added an assist.

He finished with a 95-14-4 record as a Warrior, and moves to USHL play as a member of the Green Bay Gamblers.
