Cooper Strikes First, But Falls to the Eagles in Familiar Fashion

Sam Morgen made a beautiful head-man pass to Tom Monteiro coming in fresh off the bench, Monteiro danced around two defenders and scored a stiff 5-hole shot to get the Hawks off to a 1 - 0 lead over Totino-Grace.  OK, Cooper eventually lost 10 - 2, but for the first period they showed that they had the stamina and ability to stay competitive with their skilled opponents.  Even through the second period the game was not out of reach.  Jay Tonsager scored the prettiest goal of his high school career, using a screen and burying a hard wrist-shot from the high slot. Alas, there are three periods to hockey games and the last proved to be too much for Cooper to stay with Grace. Angel Hillstrom stood tough in the net with 47 saves, but the Eagles were able to run up the score a bit anyway. Derek Lodermeier registered a hat-trick and former Cooper Youth star and friend to many Hawks Jeff Daugherty scored a goal too.  T.J. Roo and Andy McDonald were able to pad their stats a little as well with a goal for McDonald and some assists for both.

The Hawks came into the Grace game with a four game win streak and have been busy preparing for a Tuesday match-up against Irondale, a team that is more similar to the Hawks in skill level. It may be 50 degrees outside, but the ice will be cold and ready at New Hope Ice arena for what should be a good game at 7PM.
