Trojans survive wild finish to beat Stars for first time since 1991

Mike Fadden and Alex Woyda scored third-period goals, Joe Morris made 28 saves and New Prague survived allowing a late shorthanded goal during the tense closing seconds to beat Holy Angels 4-3 on Friday, Jan. 20, earning just the second win over the Stars in program history and the first since 1991.

“When you haven’t beat a team in 20 years, that’s a lot of weight,” New Prague coach Chris Lonke said. “I talked to our seniors before the game. I told them they have a chance to be a part of history.”

Fadden, a senior, scored 28 seconds into the third period to put the Trojans (8-7-1) ahead 3-2 just 28 seconds into the third period of the Missota Conference matchup. Woyda, a senior, scored with 2:17 remaining, giving the Trojans a 4-2 cushion.

Holy Angels (4-12-1) made the finish interesting when Ben Haeg scored while the Stars were killing a 5-on-3 New Prague power play. New Prague had lost to Chanhassen in overtime earlier in the season when it gave up a late shorthanded goal while leading.

“I think our guys were feeling (the pressure) a little bit,” Lonke said. “But the boys still stayed with it, and in the end we got it done.”

Morris, a senior, made a save on an open Holy Angels player in the slot with about 20 seconds left to help secure the victory.

Luke Lijewski scored twice for New Prague. Treavor Meador and Mario Bianchi added goals for Holy Angels.

Holy Angels, which has won 13 straight Missota Conference titles, dropped to 5-3-0 in league play. The Stars had defeated new Prague 7-4 on Dec. 10.

Chanhassen leads the league with a 7-0-0 record.
