David Johnson scores in first period, makes 26 saves in win over Farmington

An exceedingly rare and bizarre sequence of events during Tuesday night’s game between Bloomington Kennedy and Farmington ended with the puck rolling into an empty Farmington net and Kennedy sophomore goaltender David Johnson being credited with the goal in the host Eagles’ eventual 2-1 victory at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

“It was the first goal of the game,” Bloomington Kennedy assistant coach Jeff Atchison said. “For a while I was hoping it would turn out to be the game winner, and (Johnson) would get the shutout.”

Farmington pulled goaltender Victor Simones after a delayed penalty had been called on the Eagles, and the Tigers fired two shots on Johnson as they controlled the puck. Farmington was setting up for another shot when a pass intended for a Tigers defenseman instead skipped to center ice.

“The puck rolled over on its side and picked up some momentum,” Atchison said. “It looked like it was going wide, and then it slowly curved in.

“The parents on our side were cheering, the parents on their side were kind of looking around like, ‘Did that just happen?’ ” Atchison said.

Johnson was credited with the goal that came with 6 minutes, 24 seconds left in the first period because he was the last Kennedy player to touch the puck.

“Our bench was a little dumbfounded,” Atchison said. “I don’t think any of the kids on our team had ever seen a goalie score before.”

Farmington’s Jack Buss tied the score at 1 early in the third period, and Kennedy’s Jordan Peer scored the winner with 9:45 remaining.

The victory snapped a six-game losing skid for the Eagles, who improved to 4-13-0. The loss was the fifth straight for Farmington (5-10-2).
