Little Falls scores 16 seconds into dominating Section 6A title game win over Fergus Falls

When it comes to section championships over the past decade, Little Falls and Fergus Falls have, alternately, enjoyed an abundance of success.

Little Falls won Section 6A titles in 2008 and 2009. Back when the teams were in Section 4A, Little Falls won titles in 2005--2007. Fergus Falls had a run of seven straight section titles from 1997-2003.

This time the battle of the two small-school powerhouses went to Little Falls in a 6-1 Section 6A title game triumph over the Otters.

The tone was set early when Little Falls junior Ben Newman found the back of the net just 16 seconds into the game. Newman added a power-play goal in the closing minutes and also had an assist.

Flyers senior Mark Anez would added another goal just four minutes later to make the score 2-0.

Little Falls' Joey Hanowski scored a second-period goal and added three assists.

The Otters were able to get off a fair amount of shots but had no answer for the Flyers offense. Four of Little Falls' goals came on power plays.

Little Falls goalie Mike Stumpf was rock solid, allowing only one power-play goal to the Otters' Jake Ahlgren in the second period.

"I'm more excited for the kids who have never been down there," Little Falls coach Tony Couture said. "There are 19 (kids) and one coach who have never been there. It's just terrific,"

Little Falls finished with a 29-24 advantage in shots on goal.
