Stingy goalies meet in opener

Both St. Thomas Academy and Little Falls are strong in the net.

About the Cadets: Keep an eye out for Eric Schurhamer on the blue line. The senior defenseman has scored 14 goals and has 27 assists while helping keep the Cadets' goals-allowed average a full goal per game lower than the Class 1A champs had a year ago. The man in charge of stopping the bulk of those pucks is junior David Zevnik. He rallied from a shaky start in last year's title game (three goals allowed on nine shots) to preserve the overtime victory and was in net for last week's Section 4 championship game that STA won in overtime. He and Ian West have combined for seven shutouts in the past 12 games.

About the Flyers: This team is defensively sound in its own right. Goaltender Michael Stumpf played in all 28 games this season. It's a stretch that included a shutout streak of nearly 181 minutes over four games played from Jan. 13 to 27. On offense, a familiar name is back in St. Paul, ready to light the lamp. Joey Hanowski leads the Flyers with 57 points. He is one of only six players in Little Falls history to score 80 goals in a career. His brothers Beau and Ben are two of the others.

Did you know? Coach Tony Couture coached his 500th career game behind the Little Falls bench in January.
