Breck's boys' hockey team trailed in each of its first four games this season. Senior forward Matt Colford ended that trend less than one minute into Tuesday's game against Rogers at Anderson Arena in Golden Valley.

The host Mustangs' 7-2 victory was propelled by three unanswered goals before the game was three minutes old. Rogers never recovered.

"We're still a young squad that's finding its way, and we have to learn to overcome adversity in those situations," Rogers coach Tim Marchand said. "But Breck is a good hockey team. Holy cow, they move well, and they find each other."

Shortly after Colford's goal, Mark Sharp and Jack O'Connor scored 24 seconds apart. All three players finished with two goals as Breck (4-1), ranked No. 3 in Class 1A, rolled over No. 15 Rogers (2-2-1). The Mustangs posted 63 shots on goal and gave up 19 to Rogers.

"We came out hot and kind of rolled from there," Colford said.

Rogers got a chance to regain momentum later in the first period as Breck was called for 5-minute major boarding penalty. But the Royals struggled to get their power play set up through their man-advantage opportunity. Moments after the power play ended, Breck made it 5-0 early in the second period.

Rogers got on the board 10 seconds into the third period on a shorthanded goal from junior defenseman and Michigan Tech recruit Travis Brown.

Breck's offensive output came despite the absence of forward and senior captain Thomas Lindstrom, who missed Tuesday's game because of an upper-body injury. After pumping 32 goals into the Mustangs' attack last year, he has tallied one goal and one assist in two games this season. Dylon Eggert replaced Lindstrom on the first line.

"We've been waiting for a game like this," Breck coach Les Larson said. "This is our first full game where we put together three periods."
