Section 7AA quarterfinals: Jacob Jaremko ignites late eruption as Elk River tops Andover

After being held scoreless for the first two periods, No. 3 seed Elk River erupted for four unanswered goals -- including two from Jacob Jaremko -- in the third period to en route to a 4-1 victory over No. 6 Andover in the quarterfinals of the Section 7AA playoffs on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Elk River Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period, the Huskies struck first with just 68 seconds remaining in the second on a goal by Tyler Tomberlin.

Elk River, which had trouble solving Huskies goaltender Chase Perry through two-plus periods, finally got on the board 5:14 into the third on a goal by Jaremko.

“I think (that goal) got everybody a lot more intense and got everybody going, lifting their spirits,” Jaremko said.

It took just less than six minutes for the Elks to score again, and this time it was Andrew Zerban with the game winner.

“It was nice to see Zerban,” Elk River coach Gordie Roberts said. “He got that loose puck, and when goal scorers get that opportunity, they know where to put it.”

Jaremko got his second goal with 53 seconds left to ice the game for the Elks.

An empty net goal by Grant Bunker all but ended the Huskies' season with just 17 seconds remaining.

Elk River advances to play Grand Rapids, which defeated St. Francis 6-2 in another Thursday quarterfinal, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.
