On Thursday, February 5th, the Mound-Westonka Boy’s Hockey team hosted the Waconia Wildcats, and the White Hawks wasted no time in jumping to an early lead. Just 10 seconds into the game, Kirby Horgan took control of the puck along the boards at center ice, and shoveled a pass to his brother Riley breaking past him up the side. Riley went into the offensive zone, drew two defensemen to himself, and slid a pass to Ben Curti breaking down the center to the net, and Curti put the puck home for a 1-0 lead. Thirty seconds later, with Curti and both Horgans working the puck behind the Wildcat net, Riley Horgan picked up the puck, circled to the center slot, and fired a wrist shot to the upper corner for a 2-0 White Hawk lead. Waconia came back and put some good pressure on the White Hawk net, but junior goalie Aaron Davis shut the door, and the White Hawks carried their 2-0 lead into the second period.
Midway into the second period, Riley Horgan took control of the puck in the offensive corner, and took it toward the net. As the defense converged on him, he found Dan Hoy open right in front of the net, and Hoy found the back of the net with his shot. A few minutes later, the White Hawks made it 4-0 when defenseman Tanner Botts took a shot from the point, and Riley Williams battled through traffic in front to tip it in. With 2 minutes left in the period, the White Hawks made it 5-0 when Botts took another shot from the point, and when Kirby Horgan tried to slam it in, the puck came loose in front, and Riley Horgan tucked it around the goalie’s pads. The White Hawks finished their scoring for the second period on a power play when Broc Couser moved the puck from one point to Nick Kuehl at the other, and Kuehl’s shot on net was tipped past the goalie by Colby Kratch for a 6-0 White Hawk lead after two.
In the third period, Waconia broke onto the board with a goal early in the period, but the White Hawks answered with one of their own, when Kirby Horgan once again slid the puck to his brother Riley racing past him at center ice, and Riley took it deep into the zone, bringing 3 defenders with him. Riley then dropped the puck back for Ben Curti, and Curti rifled another wrist shot into the net for a final 7-1 White Hawk win.
On Saturday, February 7th, the White Hawks traveled to Victoria to take on the Holy Family Fire. This game was very evenly played, but the White Hawks earned a 1-0 lead late in the first period, when Josh Bingham took a pass from Colby Kratch in the left circle, and flipped a wrist shot over the goalie’s glove.
The Fire came back to tie the game at 1-1 early in the second period, but the White Hawks responded just 20 seconds later, when Ben Curti picked off a pass right in front of the Fire goal and pounded it in for a 2-1 White Hawk lead. The White Hawks made it 3-1 just over a minute later when, on a power play, Riley Horgan moved the puck to Broc Couser at the point. With traffic in front, Couser fired a wrist shot that the goalie got a hand on but could not control, and the puck flipped over his shoulder into the net.
In the third period, the White Hawks closed out the scoring, with 5 minutes left in the game, when Ben Curti passed the puck out of the defensive end to Riley Horgan breaking up the ice. Horgan hit his brother Kirby at the Fire blue line, and Kirby went outside around the defense, pulled the goalie out of the net, and slid it around him for a final 4-1 White Hawk win. In goal, senior Dan Swanson had 25 solid saves to lead the White Hawks to victory.
