The St. Paul Academy and Summit School/Mounds Park Academy boys' hockey team finished the week of 9 February 2009 with two wins and one loss, pushing their overall record to 15 wins, 8 losses, and 1 tie overall, 7-5-0 in Tri-Metro Conference play, which has them alone in third place, two points ahead of St. Paul Johnson.

The week began with a home game against Conference leader Breck, the fourth rated Class A team in the State in the most recent Breakdown rankings.  The Spartans battle heartily, trailing just 2-0 after the first period, but the Breck attack was too much to handle, and the Mustangs outscored the Spartans 5-0 over the final two periods, giving Breck the 7-0 shut-out victory.

The Spartans rebounded on Thursday evening at the Schwans Super Rink, earning a 5-3 victory over Meadow Creek Christian.  Junior wing Wyatt Wenzel recorded a hat trick, and junior goaltender Pete Simpson was the winner in nets.  Senior Mike Falvey and junior James Trevathan each had three points on the day.

The Academy boys returned to Tri-Metro play on Saturday afternoon in Plymouth against Providence Academy.  The Spartans controlled much of the play, but were only able to get one goal, a power-play tally by sophomore defenseman Max Hommeyer, past the Lions' standout junior goaltender Mike Taffe.  Luckily the Spartans' senior net minder Steven Estep was on his game, making several key third period saves to send the game into overtime.  Junior wing Wyatt Wenzel continued his goal-scoring ways in the extra session, giving the Spartans the victory after working a nice play out of the corner with senior winger Mike Falvey and junior center Luc Bruggeman.  Falvey and Bruggeman each finished the day with two assists.

The final week of the regular season looms for the Spartans, who look to lock up third place in the Tri-Metro Conference as they face St. Paul Como Park on Thursday evening at Drake Arena, and the St. Paul Saints on Saturday afternoon at the Fairgrounds Coliseum.
