Youthful East Grand Forks takes on veteran Rochester Lourdes

About the Green Wave: Power and depth will be East Grand Forks’ strengths. These tools return the Green Wave to the state tournament after just more than a decade away. “We don’t rely on one or two players to get it done for us,” coach Tyler Palmiscno said. “It’s done by committee. Different guys step up at different times of the year.” Some of these figures are senior center Tommy Hajicek, sophomore winger Dixon Bowen and freshman winger Tanner Tweeten. Hajicek scored a team-high 20 goals and had 23 assists. East Grand Forks is a young team, relying on a handful of freshmen and sophomores to produce. The only tournament qualifier the Green Wave played this season was Class 2A’s Moorhead, and EGF lost 4-3.

About the Eagles: Rochester Lourdes hopes to improve on its quick two-and-out performance in last year’s state tournament. The newly assigned No. 5 seed puts the Eagles in a better position to finally break out of the first round. Senior winger Jason Samuelson leads the Eagles with 74 points (26 goals, 48 assists), while senior center Alex Funk has a team-high 42 goals. The Eagles were blown out by tournament top seeds St. Thomas Academy (8-1) and Breck (7-2). They also blew out qualifier Duluth Marshall 7-0.

Did you know? Co-ops have worked well for Rochester Lourdes. It is making a fourth consecutive appearance as partner with Stewartville and had five previous appearances with various other co-ops.
