About the Hornets: Edina faced adversity all season, from playing the state’s toughest schedule to losing four regulars with injuries for a stretch in January to killing a Burnsville penalty in the final two minutes of the Section 2 championship game. “We’ve had to work hard through most of these games against really good hockey teams,” coach Curt Giles said. “That’s the way our team has been built this year.” Balance has been important to Edina’s success. All three of the forward lines contributed a goal against Burnsville. “Everybody seems to chip in a little bit here and there to make a big difference,” Giles said.

About the Panthers: Struggling at times this season to score goals, Lakeville North made the most of its chances in the playoffs. The team scored 13 goals in a three-game span for the second time this season. Four players are in double digits in scoring: Jack Diercks (16 goals), Jack Poehling (12) and Tristen Hazlett and Conner Hyden (10 each). Lakeville North went 1-12-1 against teams ranked in the top 20, losing three of those games in overtime. Quarterfinal success has been hard to come by for the Panthers. They have been outscored 18-3 in three previous appearances.

Did you know? Edina’s seven consecutive state appearances are the most since Fergus Falls went to seven Class 1A tournaments from 1997 to 2003. Eveleth is the standard-bearer, going to state 12 consecutive times from 1945-56.
