St. Thomas Academy, favored to win its third consecutive Class 1A boys’ hockey state tournament title on Saturday, will opt-up to 2A next season and be placed in Section 3.

The Minnesota State High School League announced the Cadets’ placement as part of its bi-annual reclassification process. Schools are assigned by their enrollment but can appeal to opt-up or down for competitive reasons.

Boys’ hockey coaches have expressed keen interest in the Cadets’ section placement since the school announced its intentions to opt-up in December. In addition to dominating the Class 1A level, St. Thomas Academy has enjoyed success against a 2A-heavy schedule.

Other notable teams on the move include:

Totino-Grace football, Class 5A champs last season, heads up to Class 6A, Section 5.

Prairie Seeds Academy boys’ soccer, a successful yet controversial program, joins Class 2A, Section 5.

Austin’s wrestling program moves up from Class 2A to Section 1, 3A.

The MSHSL will have the entire reclassification list available on its website www.mshsl.org by Sunday morning.
