Rangers give former Cretin-Derham Hall standout 6-year contract worth $28.2 million

New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh, a former Cretin-Derham Hall star who won the Mr. Hockey Award in 2007, signed a six-year contract extension worth $28.2 million.

McDonagh, who led the Raiders to their only state championship in 2006 as a junior, scored four goals and had 19 points in 47 games for the Rangers last season. His average of 24:21 in ice time per game was second only to defense partner Dan Girardi's 25:24.

McDonagh played for the University of Wisconsin and was acquired by the Rangers in a 2009 trade with Montreal.
