Royals top Princeton 5-2 in conference opener

Two goals by defenseman Travis Brown helped the Rogers Royals defeat the Princeton Tigers 5-2 on Saturday night in Princeton.

Brown notched the Royals first goal, tying the score 1-1, in the first period, assisted by Branden Cecil, and the final goal, short-handed, with 59 seconds left.

Also scoring for Rogers (3-0) in their Mississippi 8 opener were Dustin Schoepke (Spencer Marchand assisting) and Vinny Billing on a power play in the second period, and Alexander Lorman (Blake Timm) in the third period.

Silas Reek and Jake Green scored for Princeton (1-3).

Rogers incurred five penalties, including a 10-minute misconduct (checking from behind) and Princeton had two penalties.

Rogers goalie Jackson Nelson saved 24 of 26 shots on goal. Princeton’s Max Mattson had 27 saves.

The Royals will play at Anoka on Tuesday.
