It was another week of progression for the STMA Knights boys hockey team. The team won against a scrappy Coon Rapids club, beat rival Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake, and lost against one of the top ranked teams in the state.

After losing a tough game to Chisago Lakes, the Knights turned right around and won against a Coon Rapids team from a very tough conference.

Brett Marshall scored first for the Knights (unassisted) only for Coon Rapids’ Brett Johnson to tie the game later in the period (Michael Fredrickson, Dominic Hafner). At the end of one, the score was 1-1.

The teams traded goals again in the second period. The Cardinals scored first to grab a 2-1 lead on a Garrett Dey goal (Seth Johnson, Hafner). Just seconds later, Mitch Bourgerie made the most of a penalty shot, tying the game at 2-2. The score remained the same at the end of two.

In the third, Coon Rapids again scored first on a Seth Johnson goal (Dey, Zachary Havelka). With about four minutes left, Bourgerie scored his second of the game to tie it at 3-3. Then, with 27 seconds left in regulation, Cody Reckard scored the game winning goal (Trevor Zins, Tucker Bjorlin).

Coach Jerr Johnson said his team played a really good game offensively with 44 shots on goal. He gave credit to Coon Rapids for a tough game.

“They don’t own a lot of wins, but they play in a tough conference and they’ve been playing close games against some of the best teams in the state, so it was a really good win for us,” he said.

KNIGHTS BEAT

MONTICELLO

STMA welcomed Monticello/Annandale/Maple Lake to the Albertville Arena on Thursday for a conference tilt.

The Knights grabbed a 1-0 first period lead on a goal by Tucker Bjorlin (Cody Reckard, Mitch Bourgerie). The Knights extended the lead in the second when Connor Spetz scored a power play goal (Bourgerie).

MAML cut the lead in half, getting on the board with a Tyler Mros power play goal (Colton Jones). However, the Knights reclaimed the two goal lead when Spetz scored his second of the game (Reckard, Matt Kisch).

Brooke Evans got MAML within one in the third period (Jones), but Spetz recorded the hat trick, getting his third goal on an empty net with only seconds remaining as the Knights won 4-2 (Jack Kelly, Tyler Hayes).

Coach Johnson said he moved Spetz from defense to try and give his team more scoring chances, since Spetz is the leading scorer on the team. He was pleased with another strong effort from his team.

DULUTH EAST

Coach Johnson knows the one thing a team cannot do in hockey is repeatedly put a good team on the power play. His team did just that on Saturday. The opponent: Duluth East, ranked #7 in Minnesota.

Duluth East scored three goals in the first period, two on the power play. Phillip Beaulieu scored on the power play to open the game (Jack Kolar, Alex Trapp). Nick Altmann scored to make it 2-0 later in the period (even strength, unassisted). Altmann scored again on the power play  to make it 3-0 (Beaulieu, Brian Bunten).

Beaulieu scored his second power play goal to make it 4-0 in the second (Trapp, Kolar). The Knights got on the board thanks to Logan Nelson, making it 4-1 (Tucker Bjorlin, Connor Greenwood). Kolar finished up the scoring with DE’s fourth PPG (Altmann, Bunten) in the third for a 5-1 final score.

Coach Johnson felt his team came away with some positivity despite the loss.

“Our kids walked out of there feeling like they could play with that team when we play even strength five on five.”
