Final home game for 11 Buffalo Seniors

Gunnar Goodmanson scored his 25th goal of the season against the Packers.

The final home game at the Buffalo Civic Center for 11 seniors was more than just a bid farewell. The Buffalo boys’ hockey team shook off a 5-3 road loss Feb. 13 at Princeton with a convincing 6-1 regular season finale win last Saturday, Feb. 15 over South St. Paul.

Head coach Aaron Johnson started the game with an all-senior starting lineup; forwards Jake Michalko, Wilson Anderle and Hunter Thompson, and defensemen Justin Laven and Loren Lindvall along with goalie Mikey Otten  knew this would be their last career home game, and the group along with five other senior skaters wanted to build momentum into their playoff road game.

The seniors didn’t disappoint. Thompson made it 1-0 just 2:57 into the opening period. Less than two minutes elapsed and the Bison were in front 3-0 on goals by senior Casey Anderson and Anderle.

“We started our all senior line and they set the tone for us,” said Bison head coach Aaron Johnson.

Buffalo scored six unanswered goals to open a 6-0 lead after two periods. Juniors Jerame Schuetzle, Gunnar Goodmanson and Reed Morehouse scored the other goals. Otten made a highlight save to preserve the shutout bid midway through period two, but the Packers finally cracked the goose egg just 38 seconds into period three on a goal by Nick Chulla. Otten said it was disappointing to lose the shutout, but felt good about the overall team game.

“It was probably one of our better games of the season,” Otten said. “It feels good going out on a good note.”
