Defending Class 2A Edina secured an eighth-consecutive trip to the state tournament with a fast start and a key special teams goal.

Edina’s players seemed poised to put the game out of reach early. Garrett Wait and Cullen Munson each scored within the first 2 ½ minutes of the first period for a 2-0 Hornets’ lead. Wait and Munson have combined for 30 goals this season.

Bloomington Jefferson, playing in its first section title game since 2010, cut the lead to 2-1 on Kyle Wendorf’s goal at 4:01 of the period.

Inspired, the Jaguars’ kept battling and later drew a power-play chance in the second period. It backfired as Dylan Malmquist scored shorthanded and bumped Edina’s lead to 3-1. The Jaguars would get no closer.

“We scored two quick ones and a lot of teams will go away when that happens,” Edina coach Curt Giles said. “Jefferson didn’t. They started playing better. So I give our players credit for not going away when they got challenged.”

Malmquist said of his goal: “That was a big momentum shift. It all started with a blocked shot by Sam Fuss and a good pass from Ben Foley.”

For the game, Edina outshot the Jaguars 31-11. While goaltender Grant Martens kept the Jaguars in the game, he did not receive enough offensive support.

Third period goals from Miguel Fidler and Wait cemented the victory.

Edina rolls into the state tournament on a 10-0 surge through a portion of the toughest schedule in the state.
