Former Mounds View captain Josh Lavalle dies of cancer

He was diagnosed in June 2012 and returned between cancer treatments to play one game during his senior season.

Former Mounds View hockey player Josh Lavalle, who was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2012, died Monday.

Lavalle was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia after his junior year and underwent weekly chemotherapy treatments that left him fatigued. He had been an all-Suburban East Conference honorable mention defenseman and hoped to resume playing as a senior. Read Star Tribune staff writer David La Vaque’s story here.

In between treatments, Lavalle returned to the ice for a game against Hastings in January 2013. He was a team captain as a senior.

After graduating from Mounds View, Lavalle enrolled at the University of Minnesota.

"Josh was an truly amazing kid,'' Mounds View coach Rick Thomas said. "He touched so many people in our community. He will be missed greatly by many people.''

He is survived by his parents, Marty and Luanne, and brothers Alex and Matt.
