Class 2A, Section 6 has proven to be the toughest battleground in Minnesota boys’ high school hockey in recent years. Three of the last six Class 2A state champions have come from the section (Eden Prairie in 2009 and 2011, Benilde-St. Margaret’s in 2012) and it annually features multiple teams dotting the state polls.

Some observers have argued that escaping the section is often tougher than getting to the state championship game, as section semifinals often pit four teams ranked in the top 10.

The battleground looks no different this winter, as the section has five of the top 17 teams in the most recent coaches poll dated Dec. 3 (No. 4 Wayzata, No. 7 Eden Prairie, No. 8 Benilde-St. Margaret’s, No. 15 Holy Family Catholic and No. 17 Minnetonka). Several of those teams are in the Lake Conference and will begin going head-to-head after the holidays, but there are a few great nonconference matchups that will help decide seeding.

One of those games is this Friday when Benilde-St. Margaret’s visits Eden Prairie, and it is our top Game of the Week.
