Happy birthday, Spuds.

One of northwestern Minnesota’s top programs turns 50 on Saturday, and Moorhead has scheduled a full day of celebrations in honor of the milestone. The Spuds certainly had humble beginnings five decades ago, playing outdoors with a roster of skaters still learning the game. From some tough years under founding coach Chuck Watson, Moorhead has become a consistent winner, advancing to 14 state tournaments since 1992 — finishing as the state runner-up a record seven times.

It’s only fitting that the showcase date comes against the Spuds’ biggest Class 2A, Section 8 rival, Roseau. One of the best head-to-head battles in the state the past 20 years, the game features the defending section champion Rams and Moorhead, ranked No. 18 in the latest Class 2A coaches poll.

While both are looking up at Bemidji this year, a Rams versus Spuds game on the 50th anniversary of Moorhead hockey is an easy choice as our Top Game of the Week.
