Al Godfrey, a St. Paul Central and Macalester graduate who started his teaching and coaching career in Baudette before spending 25 seasons at Hopkins, recently died in Bradenton, Fla. He was 75.

Allan D. Godfrey , age 75 of Bradenton, Florida Passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010 after a short illness. Al was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on December 1, 1934, son of the late Otis and Alice (Flinn) Godfrey. Al graduated from St. Paul Central High School and Macalester College with a BS and Master's Degrees in Social Science. Al was a teacher and hockey coach for 30 years, starting in Baudette, MN and continuing for 25 years in Hopkins, MN. As a second career, Al continued in hockey as professional scout for the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, and Anaheim Mighty Ducks. While working with the Calgary Flames as a scout, the team won the Stanley Cup earning Al his prized Stanley Cup ring in 1989. In addition to scouting and being a high school hockey coach, Al taught and coached at both the North Star and Bob Johnson Youth Hockey Camps. Later in life Al worked as a hockey coach with paralyzed athletes. In 1992, Al was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame. It was always, "a great day for hockey!" Al is survived by his wife Shirley (Metcalfe) Godfrey who he married on July 15 1989 in Wingham, Ontario. He is also survived by sisters Alice Wimer (Bill) and Marilyn Burnes (Bob); four sons Allan (Pam); Kevin (Darlene), Brian (Cheri), Steven (Sherry), and one daughter Karen (Jeff) Puffett. Additionally he has three stepchildren Andrea Hamilton (Paul); Angela Mann (Wayne), and Joe Walker (Angeleen). He also leaves a legacy of 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents Otis H. and Alice (Flinn) Godfrey, brother Judge Otis H. Godfrey II and grandson Taylor Mann. Al loved his family, friends, and especially his life in retirement at the Rosedale Golf Community in Bradenton, Florida. While living in Bradenton, Al was inducted into the Masonic Temple on December 1, 2000. He was an avid golfer who will be remembered by all for his zest for life and competitive spirit. He loved games of all kinds, but you would often find him in a cribbage game, even playing in the hospital winning the last few games he played. Al will be greatly missed by family and friends. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the House of Hope, Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Minnesota. Internment will be in Acacia Cemetery, in St. Paul, Minnesota.
