BSM JV battles for overtime win over Blaine

Collins' hat trick leads Red Knights to victory.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Joe Collins capped his first hat trick as a Red Knight with a goal 30 seconds into overtime as Benilde-St. Margaret's eanred a 4-3 win over Blaine in junior varsity action.

The Red Knights never trailed in the game but the Bengals answered each BSM goal in order to take the game into the extra session.

Ben Scherer scored just three minutes, five seconds into the game to give the hosts an early lead but Steven West scored on the power-play, at 9:47, to tie the game for the visitors.

Less than 90 seconds later, Collins banged home a loose puck  in front and the Red Knights took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

West tied the game at 5:48 of the second period when he scored a short-handed goal but, before the BSM power play was over, Collins scored his second goal of the game to restore the hosts' lead.

Blaine's Tyler Malpass tied the scored with 3:30 to play in the middle stanza and the team's skated through a scoreless third before Collins finished off a Matthew Kocourek pass for the overtime winner.

Alex Brigino was the winner in goal for the Red Knights, turning aside a season-high 26 shots for his third win of the year.

BSM ends its four-game homestand, Friday, when it hosts Moorhead in a 5 p.m. game at the SLP Rec Center.
