Balanced attack leads BSM JV past Hopkins

Red Knights get points from 14 of 16 players in win over Royals.

HOPKINS -- Benilde-St. Margaret's took a 3-0 lead, had a brief scare when Hopkins scored twice in the first minute of the third period, but then scored three more goals in the game's final nine minutes to claim a 6-2 junior varsity win.

Despite a dominant first period, in which they outshot their hosts, 9-3, the Red Knights did not get on the scoreboard until 43 seconds remained in the opening frame when Joe Collins buried a shot from the left faceoff circle.

BSM dominated the second period as well, holding a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal, but the Red Knights couldn't expand their lead until Dawons Spindler scored with two minutes remaining in the stanza.

That two-goal lead turned into a three-goal lead just 22 seconds later when Michael McNeil scored to send BSM into the second intermission with a 3-0 lead.

The Royals then came out and scored just 14 seconds into the final period and added another goal 41 seconds later, and the Red Knights called a timeout.

Head coach Chris McGowan settled his charges down and they then went onto hold Hopkins at bay.

Meanwhile, Lukas Metcalfe scored at 6he 6:15 mark and Max Jablonski added another goal with 5:32 to play.

Ben Scherer then capped off the victory with a power-play goal with 1:02 remaining in the game.

Alex Brigino recorded 15 saves as the Red Knights held a 32-17 advantage in shots on goal.

Next up for BSM is the Sports Authority Holiday Classic ath the St. Louis Park Rec Center. The Red Knights open action, Monday, with an 8 a.m. game versus Lakeville North. They will follow that with a 2:30 p.m. game, Tuesday, versus Elk River before wrapping up tournament play, Wednesday, with a 12:30 p.m. game versus Maple Grove.
