Bemidji claims consolation title, tops Delano 6-2

DULUTH — The Bemidji High School boys hockey team picked itself up from a first-round loss at the Duluth Hilltopper Holiday Classic, as the Lumberjacks topped Class A No. 6 Delano 6-2 Saturday afternoon to win the consolation title.

 
 

Tyler McNamara scored two goals for the Lumberjacks, who are now the No. 8 team in Class AA after losing to Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in the first round Tuesday then defeating hosts Duluth Marshall on Wednesday.

The Lumberjacks (9-1-2) fell behind early after a goal by Delano’s Ben Meyers, but Bemidji scored three unanswered goals to take the lead. Brady Tatro put the Lumberjacks on the scoreboard, then McNamara scored the next two. His shorthanded goal at the 8 minute, 31 second mark of the second period.

Just Lusby, Hunter Olson and Jack Johnson also scored for BHS.

Bemidji’s Matt Fitzgerald stopped 15 of 17 shots to earn the win, while Jackson Hjelle had 37 saves in the loss for the Tigers (8-4-0).

The Lumberjacks return to the ice on Tuesday when they travel to Crookston for a Mariucci Conference game.
