Scherer scores Red Knights' goals in loss to Cadets.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- St. Thomas Academy scored just 18 seconds into the game, got an empty-net goal with five seconds to play, and ended Benilde-St. Margaret's junior varsity's four-game winning streak with a 4-2 victory.

Nico Vega scored to put the Cadets on the scoreboard early and they would hold that lead into the second period, when Scherer evened the score with his eighth goal of the season.

St. Thomas, which never trailed in the game, answere at 6:36 of the middle stanza when Matt Waterloo scored and the score remained 2-1 for nearly 17 minutes.

With 8:48 to play, Ben Stucker gave the Cadets a 3-1 and they would hold onto the two-goal lead until the closing minutes.

With goalie Alex Brigino pulled for an extra attacker, Scherer notched his ninth goal of the season with 1:41 to play and set up a frantic finish.

The Red Knights would get four shots off in the game's final minute but Carter Winkler blocked two of those shots and, after Nick Skweres won a faceoff in his own zone with 11 seconds to play, Cade Huntley scored into the empty BSM net to seal the Cadets' victory.

For the middle game of a three-game homestand this week, the Red Knights return to action, Thursday, when they open Metro West Conference play by hosting Chanhassen at 5 p.m.
