Boys Improve Record to 10-1-2

The Bemidji High School boys hockey team scored three goals in a 47-second span and cruised to a 6-1 road win over Crookston on Tuesday night.

Hunter Olson scored two goals, while Alex Pollock, Cole Hartje, Matthew Gregg and Josh Lusby added a goal each.

A pair of goals by Olson got the scoring started for the Lumberjacks, with the goals separated by only 34 seconds. Pollock made it 3-0 just 13 seconds later.

Bemidji head coach Wade Chiodo said he had never seen a scoring spell in such a short amount of time.

“No, not that quick obviously, scoring three goals like that,” Chiodo said. “But you know, the Matt Gregg, Hunter Olson and Tyler McNamara line set the tone. They did a good job. They scored two goals back-to-back. They played great all night.”

Cole Hartje followed that trio of quick goals up by putting one in the back of the net barely a minute after Pollock’s goal as Bemidji took a 4-0 lead into the first intermission.

Crookston got on the board with less than five minutes left in the second period when Doug Larson made it 4-1.

Two minutes later, Gregg’s goal made it a four-goal game once again. Josh Lusby scored the lone goal of the third period to boost the Lumberjack lead to 6-1.

The Lumberjacks were firing off shots at a steady clip, putting up 53 shots on goal.

“Bottom line is we had to create a little bit more traffic getting to the net,” Chiodo said. “We had a lot of shots that were from the perimeter. Obviously when you get 53 shots, there’s going to be some golden opportunities but you know we had a lot of shots from the outside and we gotta find ways to get to teams and create traffic around the goalie.”

Bemidji will be on the road again Saturday at St. Cloud Tech for a 3 p.m. contest.
