ROSEAU — The Bemidji High School boys hockey team staved off a third period comeback attempt to beat Section 8AA foe Roseau in a 5-3 road win Thursday night.

“The first period we were absolutely flying out there,” BHS head coach Wade Chiodo said. “But then we got away from our game a little bit in the second and third period.”

The Lumberjacks (16-2-2) got rolling early with three first period goals.

Chase Hartje scored just 24 seconds into the game to put Bemidji up 1-0.

Brady Tatro converted on the power play at the 9:12 mark in the period to extend the lead to 2-0.

Less than five minutes later, Cole Hartje found the back of the net to send the Lumberjacks into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

The Rams (10-11-1) got on the board when Alex Verbout scored at the 4:11 mark of the second period.

A Nick Leitner power play goal three minutes later returned the three-goal advantage to Bemidji.

But Cody Gumeringer made it a two-goal game when he struck at the 10:19 mark of the middle frame as the score stood at 4-2 Bemidji entering the final period.

Verbout made it a one-goal deficit for Roseau when he scored a mere 38 seconds into the third.

The lead remained 4-3 for the Lumberjacks until Rocky Copiskey added an insurance goal for his side with less than six minutes remaining in the game.

Bemidji outshot the Rams by nearly two to one, putting 50 shots on goal to Roseau’s 26. Matt Fitzgerald played the first two periods and made 12 saves for BHS while Carson Olson came in for the third period and stopped 11 shots.

The Lumberjacks return home Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest against fellow Section 8AA school St. Michael-Albertville.
