THREE STARS

1. Casey Mittelstadt, Eden Prairie: The junior either set up or scored each of the Eagles’ first five goals, finishing with a hat trick as he repeatedly raced around and through the Grand Rapids defense.

 

2. Alex Schilling, Wayzata: The last line of Wayzata’s staunch defense was perfect until the final minute Friday, enough time for the Trojans to build a two-goal lead. He stopped 20 of 21 Stillwater shots, including a point-blank attempt to prevent a last-second tie.

 

3. Logan Judnick, Hermantown: The first of his two goals, scored early in the second period, gave Hermantown a 4-1 lead and sunk a listing St. Paul Academy team.

 

NUMBERS

Hermantown’s lucky number? Since winning a Class 1A state title in 2007, the Hawks have dropped six consecutive championship games. The first loss came against Breck.

Number of goals scored by Breck’s top line of Chase Ellingson, William Blake and Tyler Scott, two-thirds of Mustangs’ team total.

Wayzata’s first appearance in the Class 2A championship game. Previous tries came in 1954, 2004 and 2013.

Attendance

The Friday afternoon session drew an announced 10,341 fans. The evening session’s games drew a record 22,244. The previous high for a Friday night session was 19,547 in 2008.
