Red Knights hand out awards at annual banquet

BSM'S 2015-16 Award Winners

The Benilde-St. Margaret's boys hockey team held its annual awards banquet at Jax Cafe in Minneapolis.

Below is a recap of the team's 2015-16 award winners.

Nick Austin -- Best Defenseman, All-Conference

Austin capped his four-year BSM career by earning the Red Knights' Best Defenseman Award as well as being named All-Metro West Conference.

In addition, he was a finalist for the Reed Larson Award as the state's top senior defenseman while earning first Minneapolis Star Tribune All-Metro and Associated Press All-State honors.

Austin led the team in shots on goal, with a career-best 116, and also set career highs with 11 goals, 30 assists and 41 points.

He record three goals and five points, both career highs, in a win at Chanhassen (Jan. 30), becoming the first Red Knight defenseman in over five years to record a hat trick.

In his career, he did not miss a game, playing in 109 consecutive contests while tallying 14 goals, 64 points and a plus/minus rating of +80.
 

 

 

 

 

Ryan Bischel -- General Sports Scholastic Award, Honorable Mention All-Metro West Conference, 2016-17 Co-Captain

Bischel was thrust into the number goalie job in 2015-16 and responded with a stellar campaign, culminating in school records for wins (24) and minutes played (1319:47) as well as second-team Minneapolis Star Tribune All-Metro accolades.

However, Bischel does not just excel on the ice, he does so off the ice as well, carrying a 4.00 grade point average, which has earned him his third consecutive General Sports Academic Award.

His 2.13 goals against average and .907 save percentage this season were both career bests and he recorded his first career shutout by stopping 21 shots in a 7-0 win at Burnsville (Dec. 1).

Recently, Bischel gave a verbal commitment to attend and play hockey at Clarkson, beginning with the 2019-20 season.

 

 

 

 

Jerry Calengor -- Honorable Mention All-Metro West Conference

After being named the team's best defensive forward last season, Calengor started the 2015-16 season by showing his offensive skills, scoring seven goals and 12 points in 10 games, which included three short-handed goals and an overtime game-winner in a 4-3 win at third-ranked Grand Rapids (Nov. 29).

However, he was moved to the blueline, where he would play for 15 of the final 17 games of the season, finishing the season with career-best totals in goals (9), assists (22) and points (31).

His versatility earned him honorable mention all-conference honors.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jared Gherardi -- Hobey Baker Character Award

Gherardi tallied a goal and 10 points while playing all 27 games in his final high school season while tallying a plus/minus rating of +22.

The Hobey Baker Character Award is given to a player on each of Minnesota's 153 high school teams and is given to a player who shows integrity and a positive attitude, coachability, outstanding sportsmanship and community spirit.

Gherardi had the opportunity to talk about the award during the Minnesota State High School League state tournament, appearing on KSTC's broadcast of the tournament along with Tom Hauser.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cade Gleekel -- Leading Scorer, All-Metro West Conference

After struggling in his first season with the Red Knights during the 2014-15 campaign, in which he scored just 12 points, Gleekel exploded as a senior, scoring 22 goals along with career highs of 36 assists, 58 points and seven game-winning goals.

Along with being named all-conference, he was a Mr. Hockey Award finalist and earned first-team Minneapolis Star Tribune All-Metro and Associated Press All-State honors.

Gleekel put together a 22-game point-scoring streak before having it ended when he injured his shoulder early in a 4-2 win at Wayzata (Feb. 11). He recorded a career-best six points in a win at Chanhassen (Jan. 30) and had 17 multiple-point games.

Among his seven game-winning goals, he scored four consecutive game winners (Jan. 5-19).

Gleekel finished his high school career with 73 goals and 155 points in 105 games.
 

 

 

Peter Heimbold -- Vic St. Martin Coaches Award

Heimbold, in his fourth varsity season with the Red Knights, had career highs in assists (14), points (17), plusminus rating (+31) and blocked shots (18).

He also set single-game career highs with four assists and a +6 rating in a Jan. 28 game versus Bloomington Kennedy, and eights shots on goal in a win over Maple Grove, Dec. 30.

During his career, Heimbold played in 103 games and was +72 with nine goals and 47 points.

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

Jacob Holmers -- Honorable Mention All-Metro West Conference

Holmers quietly put together career-best totals of 16 goals and 32 during his senior campaign, finishing fourth in goals and fifth in points for the Red Knights this season.

He collected his first hat trick, Jan. 28, in a win over Bloomington Kennedy, in the midst of a career-best 12-game point-scoring streak, during which time he scored 10 goals and 19 points.

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Connor Mayer -- All-Metro West Conference, 2016-17 Co-Captain

A third-team Minneapolis Star Tribune All-Metro selection, Mayer's second varsity campaign was a breakout season.

He scored 10 goals and 27 points in 24 games while leading the team with 51 blocked shots, showing his prowess in both ends of the ice.

The Red Knight junior committed to the University of Connecticut last season and showed the Huskies' staff that they have solid player in their future.

Mayer was at his best in key games down the stretch, scoring points in each of his last 10 games, tallying seven goals and 18 points during that time, including seven multiple-point games.

 


 

 

 

 

Auggie Moore -- Jack Jablonski Most Determined Player, Andrew Alberts Most Improved Player, All-Metro West Conference

After scoring four goals and 13 points in his first two varsity seasons, Moore caught fire as a senior, scoring points in 25 of 27 games, finishing the season with 21 goals and 48 points to go with a team-best plus/minus rating of +52.

He had a career-best five points in a 6-5 overtime win versus Eden Prairie, Dec. 11, in which he scored a short-handed, game-tying goal which sent the game into overtime and vaulted BSM to the number one spot in the state rankings, where they would spend the next 10 weeks.

Headed to Alberni Valley of the British Columbia Hockey League next season, Moore follows in the footsteps of his brother, T.J. ('13), who also earned all-conference honors along with Most Determined Player and Most Improved Player Awards during his career.
 

 

 

 

 

Peter Moran -- Best Defensive Forward, 2016-17 Co-Captain

Moran got his Red Knight varsity career started off in style by scoring a pair of goals and three points in a season-opening 6-1 win at St. Michael-Albertville, Nov. 24.

Primarily used in a checking role as the center of BSM's third line, Moran nevertheless chipped in with seven goals, three of which were the games' first goal along with two game winners, and 12 points.

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jack Qualen -- Andrew Alberts Most Improved Player

After two seasons on the BSM junior varsity, and three games with the varsity last season, Qualen stepped into the Red Knight lineup this season and played all 27 games, scoring four goals and eight points.

He scored his first career goal in the season's second game, an 8-2 win at Duluth Marshall, Nov. 27.

Qualen then scored goals in two of the team's final three games of the season and notched four points in his final eight games.



 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Zach Risteau -- All-Metro West Conference

After scoring 22 goals as a junior last season, Risteau was going to be relied upon to provide offense for the Red Knights this season and he did not disappoint.

He opened the season with a nine-game point-scoring streak, tallying five goals and 17 points during that time.

He scored 10 goals and 20 points in the final eight games of the season, notching three multiple-goal and seven multiple-point game during that stretch.

All told, he recorded his first 50-point season with 21 goals and 29 assists while leading the team with five power-play goals.
