Benilde-St. Margaret's Daly enjoying show

Team Southeast defenseman likes all aspects of his team's game in shutout victory

Spotlight On: Patrick Daly

To say Patrick Daly has been “toiling in obscurity” the last few seasons might not be completely accurate.

At high-profile Class AA powerhouse Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Daly has performed well enough to earn a spot in the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League the past two years.

Still, because of a broken leg that knocked him out of most of the 2009-10 high school season, the casual state high school hockey fan might not know much about the senior defenseman.

Daly’s under-the-radar stats will change quickly if his stellar play in the Elite League carries over to the high school season. On Saturday, Oct. 23, his smart, crisp puck movement and ability to snuff out rushes in the neutral zone were a big part of Team Southeast’s 5-0 victory over Shattuck-St. Mary’s at Hobbs Municipal Ice Center in Eau Claire.

“It’s always fun to beat Shattuck,” said the 5-foot-11½, 178-pound Daly. “We’re clicking finally, getting some goals, kids are scoring. Bodhi (Engum) played a heck of a game today, too, to get that shutout.”

Daly distributes praise as efficiently as he does the puck, which is to say he always is on the lookout for his teammates. Sometimes that can be a bad thing, though, as some of the Red Knights playing for league-leading Team Northwest have been reminding Daly of where Team Southeast stood in the standings by comparision.

“In school they always give me crap,” Daly said about members of the group that includes Pat Steinhauser, Christian Horn, Grant Besse and Jake O’Borsky. “But they lost to Shattuck 8-0, so now I’ve got a 1-up on them.”

Recruiting Update: A.J. Michaelson

A.J. Michaelson plays a high-speed game at a breakneck pace.

Off the ice, he apparently has the ability switch speeds. In choosing where he will play in college, Michaelson has decided to slow the pace a bit.

While he initially intended to have by now committed to one of the several top-level Division I programs courting him, the Apple Valley junior forward now hopes to make his decision before the start of the high school season in late November.

“It’s kind of up in the air,” said Michaelson, who confirmed that the University of Minnesota and the University of North Dakota remain his top two choices. “If I make my decision it is going to be right before the season. Otherwise it might come after the season.”

Bemidji State is not out of the running, as Michaelson, who scored a goal in Team Southeast’s 5-0 triumph over Shattuck-St. Mary’s, said he enjoyed his recent visit to the Beavers’ new home arena.

“I love the rink, it was a nice rink,” he said. “And they have great coaches. I like the coaches there. I have to factor them in too, I guess.”

Three Stars

1. Bodhi Engum, Team Southeast
Easy, easy, easy selection. Shattuck-St. Mary’s, a team that blitzed Elite League leader Team Northwest 8-0 earlier in the season, threw shots from all angles at Engum, who used his quickness and positioning to smother or steer aside all 42 of them. The senior from Burnsville is fun to watch when he is on, which is almost always.

2. A.J. Reid, Team Southeast
Don’t look now, but Reid, the St. Thomas Academy senior, is Team Southeast’s new scoring leader after scoring two more goals against normally stingy Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

3. Patrick Daly, Team Southeast
The defense was great in front of Engum all night, so why not give one of the six a star? Daly, a Benilde-St. Margaret’s senior, broke up numerous Shattuck-St. Mary’s rushes at center ice by alertly stepping into passing lanes. He also fired a series of low, heavy shots from the point on goal and registered an assist.

Game Recap

Bodhi Engum

Bodhi Engum, a senior from Burnsville, made 42 saves and St. Thomas Academy senior A.J. Reid scored twice to lead Team Southeast to a 5-0 victory over Shattuck-St. Mary’s on Saturday, Oct. 23, in an Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League game at Hobbs Municipal Ice Center in Eau Claire, Wis.

Engum, one of the preseason favorites to win the Frank Brimsek award given to Minnesota’s top senior goaltender, made 16 saves in each of the second and third periods to hold off Shattuck-St. Mary’s.

Team Southeast (10-7-2) beat Shattuck-St. Mary’s 6-5 on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The losses to Team Southeast were just the third and fourth in 13 Elite League games for Shattuck-St. Mary’s (9-4-0).

Reid, Team Southeast’s scoring leader with 26 points, scored both of his goals in the third period. Linemate A.J. Michaelson of Apple Valley scored a goal, as did Michael Zajac of Eagan and Zach Schroeder of St. Thomas Academy.

Zajac’s goal came while Team Southeast was shorthanded and Schroeder’s was on the power play.

Apple Valley defenseman Derek Smith added two assists.
