Edina's Fogarty registers hat trick

Senior forward leads Minnesota Red to comeback win over Michigan in third-place game

Steven Fogarty of Edina had a hat trick to help Minnesota Red rally from an early two-goal deficit and beat Michigan Development Hockey League U-18 White 8-3 on Sunday, Nov. 7, in the third-place game of the Bauer National Invitational Tournament at New Hope Ice Arena in New Hope.

Fogarty, a preseason favorite to win Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey award, scored twice in the second period and added a third-period goal as Minnesota Red rallied from a 3-1 deficit by scoring seven unanswered goals.

John Simonson of Grand Forks Central (N.D.), Jared Kohlquist of Hermantown, Simon Leahy of Milwaukee University School, Cliff Watson of Appleton United and Jeremy O’Keefe of of Grand Forks Central also scored for Minnesota Red.

Watson also had three assists to lead all scorers with four points.

Gerald Mayhew of Wyandotte Roosevelt (Mich.) scored twice for MDHL U-18 White.

Saxton Soley of Eau Claire Memorial started in goal for Minnesota Red and stopped 14 of 17 shots. Alex Lyon of Lake of the Woods took over midway through the second period and stopped all 13 shots he faced.

The Michigan goaltending tandem of Connor Hellebuyck and Blake Wojtala also split the duties and made a combined 36 saves on 44 shots.
