Jake Bischoff netted the winner in the third period vs. Edina

Jake Bischoff’s first varsity goal was a memorable one on multiple levels.

First and foremost, the power-play goal by the Grand Rapids sophomore defenseman gave the Thunderhawks a 2-1 victory at defending Class 2A state champion Edina on Thursday night.

His wrist shot from the blue line snuck by Hornets’ goalie Connor Girard at 6 minutes, 37 seconds of the third period to break a 1-1 tie.

“I just got the puck, walked to the middle and saw an opening,” said Bischoff, who also has four assists this season. “It feels pretty good. It was crazy; what a perfect time to get that first goal.”

Secondly, it keeps Grand Rapids’ record clean at 6-0. The Thunderhawks have defeated Edina, Warroad and Virginia/Mt. Iron-Buhl – all state entrants from a year ago - in that stretch.

“We’re playing well, working hard and trying to get better every day,” Bischoff said. “Hopefully we can keep doing that and keep proving to ourselves and to others that it is capable. We’re kind of under the radar right now, but competing with some of the best teams in the state.”

On a deeper level, Bischoff’s goal Thursday is one he’ll never forget because his mom wasn’t there to see it. Jackie Bischoff died last month after a battle with cancer.

“I think about her quite a lot, actually,” Jake Bischoff said. “Growing up, going to all the [high school] games was something we always did and now I know she’s still always going to be watching.”

Said former Gophers forward Grant Bischoff, Jake’s father: “I’m sure his mom would have loved to be here for that one.”

Grand Rapids stays in the Twin Cities for its next game, Friday night against Eden Prairie.
